CabbageFest is a celebration of Katherine and Rupert's marriage. We got engaged at a festival, so have created one of our own for our wedding, set in a beautiful river valley in south Devon.

Information

Where?

Yeo Farm, Topsham Bridge, Kingsbridge, Devon, TQ7 4DR.

Pictured above is the site.

When?

Guests are welcome to arrive from early evening on Friday 5 July 2024 and stay until Monday 8 July. There will be festival fun throughout, with the main ceremony taking place on Saturday 6 July around midday.

Travel

Train:

The nearest station is Totnes - about a 30minute drive. There are taxis you can get from Totnes to the site.

Please let us know here if you need a lift from Totnes station, as drivers may be able to pick you up or we will arrange a shuttle if enough demand and timings work out.

Car:

We are hoping to encourage car sharing as much as possible, please use this form to share details if you require a lift or if you’re in a position to offer a lift.

There is a dedicated car park at the festival site, close to the camp site. You will need to carry any camping equipment from the car park, but it is only a 5 minute walk. For any super heavy things or problems with carrying stuff, let us know and we may be able to help or send help.

FAQs

What should I wear?

Cabbages and flamingos is the theme if you want a theme, but if not it's totally up to you! We are keen to encourage people not to buy new things for the wedding, so have set up a clothes / accessories swap page. Charity shops and clothes swapping with friends is another option!

Clothes swap forum - click here

We do have some practical tips with the site:

  • Bring clothes for warm/dry/rainy/windy as it is an outside venue and we can't vouch for the weather. However, there’s lots of covered places if it does rain.
  • Flat shoes. It's mostly grass and shouldn't get too muddy.

Can we bring kids ?

Babies and toddlers at festivals are not an unusual sight and ours will be no different. Above all, we want everyone to be as comfortable as possible. If that means bringing them along, they’re more than welcome. If that means finding alternative care so you can properly relax, cool!

Please note that we are by a river, so you will need to keep an eye on them!

We won’t be catering specifically for babies and toddlers, so if you don’t think they will want to eat the food we are providing please remember to bring some for them.

Please note there will not be high chairs, so please bring what you need if normal seating isn’t suitable.

For older children, we will need to treat them as extra guests so this will be on an invite only basis.

Can we bring our dog?

No, sorry folks.

Plus ones?

We are pretty tight on numbers, so any plus ones / partners will be on an invite only basis.

Wedding gifts

We are not asking for a gift - your company at our wedding is more than enough (we really mean it!). But if you feel like you want to, we’d love a contribution to our honeymoon on the lizard in Cornwall.

Food

You probably know food is pretty important to us and we are excited to eat and drink with you all for our wedding! As much as possible, the food will be organic and sustainably produced.

We’ll be providing a fire-cooked vegetarian banquet on the ceremony day, Saturday 6 July, which will be at lunchtime. We met this fire-cooking gang, Ubuntu, at Shambala, where we got engaged and think the food they make is really special.

There will also be evening food provided on the Saturday: home-made flatbreads with grilled halloumi and salads, courtesy of Truly Crumptious.

Outside of Saturday lunch and dinner, we are providing some options for you to buy some lovely festival-style food, but you are also very welcome to bring your own. There will be facilities to boil water for meals and hot drinks, though you can of course bring a camping stove & kettle if that’s your bag.

On Friday 5 July there will be a sourdough pizza van – Pizza Pirates are a great Totnes-based social enterprise supporting mental health charities.

On Saturday 6 July in the morning Truly Crumptious will be doing breakfast and coffee from 9.00 - 10.30am.

On Sunday 7 July Truly Crumptious will be doing breakfast and lunch: a range of hand-made crumpets and toppings, plus coffee and hot drinks, throughout morning and afternoon.

For those who are staying until Sunday evening or Monday morning, we will be doing a big BBQ on Sunday eve. We will have enough for everyone who is down to stay over on Sunday, but please let us know if you plan to stay for the BBQ but staying elsewhere night-time so we can get food amount right. Please feel free to bring anything special you want, though we will be catering for all dietary requirements.

Please let us know of any dietary requirements on your RSVP

Programme

Friday

Euros

CabbageFest will be kicking off with a screening of the 5pm game on the Friday, Spain versus Germany. Don’t worry for those of you not into watching these games, there will be plenty of other things going on!

Pub quiz

Taking place in the Pink Flamingo, your host will be the darling of CabbageFest, Darryl Elliot, a specialist of weirdom. Darryl has curated the quiz from all of your submitted questions. Get into teams and good luck! There will be prizes.

Cabbage Cinema

Our late-night cinema opens on the Friday evening, and will be all-night long on Saturday and Sunday nights. Featuring films and TV across the decades, from silver screen classic Some Like it Hot through to recent British weirdo comedy Brian and Charles, there should be something for everyone. Click here for the full programme.

Saturday

Marriage ceremony

The Saturday will begin with our ceremony, under the big oak tree. Andy Kratzke will be leading the proceedings, with some of our friends and family carrying out the handfasting:

  • Nicola Dark, Rupert’s Mum, will speak on ‘food and sustenance’
  • Ella Potter will speak on ‘friendship’
  • John O’Malley will speak on ‘fun’.
  • Emma Atwell will speak on ‘nature’.
  • Pauline McAlpine, Katherine’s mum, will speak on ‘family’.

At the end we’ll all gather and pose for a group photo.

Fire Feast

We will be going straight into lunch after the ceremony, with flowing platters of fire-cooked seasonal food and some of our favourite wines throughout.

Speeches

After lunch, make your way to the Pink Flamingo tent for speeches:

  • Stephen McAlpine, Father of the Bride
  • Tom Acres, Rupert’s Best Man
  • Josh Ferry Woodard, Rupert’s Best Man
  • Adam Jackman, Katherine’s Best Man
  • Heather McAlpine, Katherine’s Best Woman
  • Katherine
  • James Cole, Rupert’s Dad, who will be introducing the band, The Rumpert Mole Experience

The Rumpert Mole Experience

Bringing a wild fusion of 90s europop, children’s TV themes, 80s parody synth and kazoo-driven cringe-core, The Rumpert Mole Experience have come together for one-night only to jive the pants off CabbageFest. Formed in 2023, they have already been nominated for Best Newcomer on the Venga Tribute Circuit. The talent:

  • Rupert Cole, lead kazoo and backing vocals
  • Andy Kratzke, lead vocals and backing kazoo
  • Elliot ‘Brumdog’ Fenton, lead guitar
  • Gaz Voke, drums
  • Daz Elliott, percussion and gags
  • Oli Rawlings, keys
  • John ‘Ronboy’ O’Malley, bass and backing vocals
  • Luke Carter, guitar, bass and percussion

Euros

We will be screening the quarter final between England and Switzerland. Southgate haters and Southgate sympathisers unite, and cheer on the lewd-gesturing Jude “who else” saviour. Will Palmer get subbed on with 2 minutes to spare? Alternatively, sack off the drama and hit the river or disco at Plonkers.

Cabbage Games

With more heritage than the Olympics and less colonial baggage than the Commonwealth, the Cabbage Games will commence with a floating opening ceremony on the river. Led by the Bride and Groom, the inflatable animal regatta will signal the starting whistle of what will prove to be the most anticipated Games in living memory.

You will join one of the two perennial collectives, Team Cabbage and Team Flamingo. Nominated competitors from each team will undertake the traditional challenges, from space hopper races to cabbage-and-flamingo croquet.

Hosted by the experienced Cabbage Games Grandmasters, Heather McCabbage and Tom Flamingay.

The opening ceremony will be held on the Saturday, shortly after the Rumpert Moles. The Games willl take place on Sunday afternoon, depending on England’s Euro fate.

DJ Sets

CabbageFest has been lucky to secure three superstars of the moving record medium:

DJ RAWTINGS

What do you get if you cross Jamiroquai with UK garage? A pithy reductionism that could never capture the delectable dance-popfunk odyssey trodden by the jazzy honk man himself, DJ RAWTINGS

FOUR ACRES OF TAT

A DJ collective comprised of the mercurial talent of DJ IRONS and DJ YOUNG, these deck spinners will be weaving discotheque atoms through the airwaves to tickle your lobes. Ride with these musical mystics on a sonic love train to your house, my house and all our mutual houses.

Sunday

Gong bath

Soothe your psyches on Sunday morning with the meditative sounds of a gong bath. Led by Madeleine Honor, who will guide us through the peaceful, multi-layered music of gong, voice and subtle instrumentation.

If you have something comfy to lie on, bring it along.

Cabbage Games

See above for full description, but Sunday will be putting Flamingos and Cabbages against each other in a series of bizarre spectacles. hungover or hung out to dry, bringn your January King Cabbage games!

DJs - Open Decks Session

Calling on all the CabbageFest DJs to bring us Sunday vibes to unwind in the afternoon and see us through the evening.

BBQ

After a day of swimming and games, there will be a BBQ to see in the final night of CabbageFest.
